The Jockey Club is one of the most prestigious courses in South America. It is situated in San Isidro, 20 minutes away from the City.
The "Azul" (Blue) course was designed by Mr. Alistair Mackenzie in 1928 and it is now an auxiliary field of the Jockey Club, although many clubs would wish to have it as its main course.
Mackenzie kept the style of the "Colorada" (Red) course in its slopes and forestation, although the holes around the lake were redesigned to give it a very particular style. When the street dividing hole 2 from 3 is crossed, a new challenge begins, ending when hole 7 par 3 is saved. The latter has a lake that extends from the tee to the green, and the player has to go over the same way to get to the 8th tee.
Olivos Golf Club
This prestigious club's history dates back to August 13, 1926, in the Central Argentine Railway Station, when a group of "Englishmen from the railway" under Mr. Mac Donald's lead, had the first Olivos Golf Club directory meeting.
The course has currently 27 holes and it is considered one of the best in South America for its design and beauty.
Olivos Golf has been host to international tournaments and the best record for the 18 holes belongs to Roberto de Vicenzo with 63 strikes.
On the white course holes 2 and 3 are complicated and difficult as are the par 3 in hole 4, and par 4 in holes 5 and 6. Hole 5 is the most difficult as it needs a long and straight drive, because the entrance to the green is quite narrow.
On the red course holes 12, 13 and 14 are difficult and the 15 the most complicated The most difficult par 3 is hole 17 which is 209 yards and defended by 3 bunkers on the left and one on the right.
Pilar Golf Course
Located in Pilar, in one of the new fashion areas around Buenos Aires, Pilar Golf Course is a modern, very elegant and exclusive Country and Golf Club.
The American style 7221 yards long, 18 hole golf course, built on more than 100 hectares, was inaugurated in 1993 and an additional 9-hole course was opened recently. Is the only course where it is compulsory for players to use the electric carts and the course has a very impressive, luxurious and large club-house with several services for golfers.
San Andrés Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Argentina. The first course was built near the present location in 1892 and it was on this course that the first official golf match in Argentina was played in 1894.
The club and the course in their present location were founded in 1907 and the club is named after The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew's. It is no coincidence that with time the district surrounding the Club and the railway station, created initially for club members to come by train, took the name of San Andrés.
The 18 hole golf course was designed by Scottish Pro Mr. Mungo Park. It is par 72 for Men and 73 for Ladies, with a maximum 6472 yards length.
Highland Golf Club
Nature provided this place with all its charm, so that its founders and their followers could only provide comfort, sports, and a generous sense of sharing among its members.
Nonetheless something was missing, and it was a combination between the fruit of nature and the human mind, a work of art that can be clearly reflected in a golf course. Thus in the 70's, after an accomplishment in financial engineering, a gigantic step was taken towards making this blend a reality, which would become one of the landmarks in the club's history.
Artisans in this field such as Messrs. Alberto and Emilio Serra designed golf course par 72 in 53 hectares with natural lakes and its own forestation.
Its length is 6933 yards and its amplitude is hard to find in most of the existing courses. Although this comparative advantage makes the game harder as the players progress, a fact that is especially attractive for those who like a tough competition.
San Diego Golf Club
This 53 hectares excellent American style golf course design belongs to Mr.Emilio Serra, whose main concern was to achieve a true championship course.
Its main features are large extensions and gentle falls, although it also has lakes, slopes, big tees and rough zones which make it particularly challenging for the good players and accessible for the rest.
It has a magnificent and ellegant Club house.
The fields' 18 holes par 72, were inaugurated on May 25 1988, and the First Professional Grand Prize took place between November 2 and 7 of the year 1991. In that occasion Mr. Angel Cabrera won with 280 strokes after beating Jorge Soto, who had achieved the same score, in a tie break.
Ranelagh Golf Club
The Roberto de Vicenzo´s golf course was inaugurated in 1926 on the side of a railway, like so many other courses which were built by the enthusiastic railway employees of the time.
It was built on a naturally undulating ground and its design has been perfectly adapted to this environment, achieving an exceptional tour, with wide fairways surrounded by leafy groves with charming shades of green.
When the field is arranged for important tournaments, the roughs are grown so the ball has to be placed in the driver, which is often not laid in the middle of the fairway.
The tees are located well in the back, and the flags are positioned so that they are guarded by the medium sized greens, some of which have confusing breaks for first timers. Although this is when the course acquires a competitive level which makes it one of the most challenging in the country
The most significant holes are number 6 par 3 which requires a precise shot to the middle of a well shielded green with a lake across it, and number 17 par 4, with a beautiful coloration in the afternoon, that demands two very accurate shots towards a green which is troublesome if overridden. |
